Load Securement and Transport Policy

Caliber Construction Alaska Load Securement and Transport Policy

Purpose: Caliber Construction Alaska is dedicated to ensuring the safe and efficient transport of loads while minimizing the risk of accidents, injuries, and damage to property. This policy outlines guidelines and procedures for load securement, route planning, permitting, and the transportation of oversized loads.

Scope: This policy applies to all Caliber Construction Alaska employees involved in the planning, loading, securing, and transporting of loads, including drivers, supervisors, and logistics personnel.

Responsibilities:

  1. Management:

    • Management is responsible for providing adequate resources, training, and oversight to ensure compliance with this policy.
    • Management will ensure that all drivers are properly trained and certified to operate vehicles and transport loads safely.
  2. Supervisors:

    • Supervisors are responsible for enforcing this policy and ensuring that all load securement and transport activities are conducted in accordance with established procedures.
    • Supervisors will provide guidance and support to employees involved in load transport and securement.
  3. Employees:

    • All employees are responsible for familiarizing themselves with this policy and adhering to its guidelines during load transport and securement activities.
    • Employees must report any safety concerns, hazards, or incidents related to load transport to their supervisor immediately.

Load Securement:

  1. Tie-Down Procedures:

    • All loads must be properly secured using appropriate tie-downs, chains, straps, or other securing devices.
    • Tie-downs must be inspected before each use to ensure they are in good condition and capable of withstanding the forces exerted during transport.
    • The number and placement of tie-downs must be sufficient to prevent shifting or movement of the load during transport.
  2. Load Distribution:

    • Loads must be evenly distributed and centered on the vehicle or trailer to maintain stability and prevent overloading of axles.
    • Overhanging loads must be properly flagged and secured to prevent contact with other vehicles or structures.
  3. No Loose Items:

    • All loose items, including tools, equipment, and debris, must be removed or secured to prevent them from falling off during transport.
    • Tailgates, doors, and other openings must be securely closed and latched to prevent items from falling out.

Route Planning:

  1. Overhead Conflicts:

    • Routes must be planned to avoid overhead conflicts such as low bridges, power lines, and overpasses with limited clearance.
    • Drivers must be aware of the height of their vehicle and load and select routes that provide adequate clearance.
  2. Permitting:

    • Oversized or overweight loads may require special permits from state or local authorities.
    • Permits must be obtained before transporting oversized loads and displayed in accordance with regulatory requirements.
  3. Route Surveys:

    • Drivers should conduct route surveys before transporting oversized loads to identify potential obstacles, hazards, or conflicts along the route.
    • Alternate routes should be planned in advance to avoid any obstacles or restrictions encountered during the survey.

Emergency Procedures:

In the event of an emergency or accident during load transport, drivers must follow established emergency procedures, including:

  • Immediately stopping the vehicle in a safe location.
  • Notifying emergency services and reporting the incident to their supervisor.
  • Securing the area and providing assistance to injured parties if necessary.

Policy Review:

This load securement and transport policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness and relevance to current operations. Any necessary updates or revisions will be made to reflect changes in regulations, equipment, or industry best practices.

By adhering to this policy, Caliber Construction Alaska aims to maintain a safe and compliant approach to load transport and securement while upholding the highest standards of safety and professionalism.
