Forklift Safety

Forklift Safety Policy

Introduction: Forklifts are essential tools in our workplace, but they can pose serious risks if not operated safely. This policy outlines the safety measures and guidelines that must be followed by all employees who operate forklifts at Caliber Construction Alaska to prevent accidents, injuries, and fatalities.

Training and Certification:

  1. No employee shall operate a forklift without proper training or certification
  2. Training shall cover safe driving skills, operating procedures, hazard recognition, and emergency protocols.
  3. All forklift operators must pass a driving test before operating a forklift independently.
  4. Refresher training shall be provided periodically to ensure continued competency and awareness.

Safe Driving Practices:

  1. Always wear a seat belt while operating the forklift.
  2. Before backing up, ensure there are no obstacles or pedestrians in the path by using mirrors or a spotter.
  3. Cross railroad tracks diagonally to prevent damage to wheels and load slippage.
  4. Obey all speed limits, floor markings, and road signs.
  5. Maintain a safe distance from other vehicles and pedestrians, keeping at least three lengths behind.
  6. Avoid sharp turns that could lead to tipping over the forklift.
  7. Keep arms, legs, head, and feet inside the forklift while driving.
  8. Report all accidents, crashes, or near-misses to a supervisor immediately.

Working with Trailers:

  1. Set the vehicle's brakes and chock the wheels before working with trailers.
  2. Inspect the trailer interior for hazards, including loose objects, holes, and poor lighting.
  3. Ensure dock areas are clear of obstructions and slippery surfaces.
  4. Use dock plates and anti-slipping material to prevent accidents.
  5. Install fixed jacks to support uncoupled semi-trailers to prevent upending.

Pedestrian Safety:

  1. Be aware of pedestrians and always give them the right of way.
  2. Never allow pedestrians to walk or stand under raised forks.
  3. Use the forklift's horn, mirrors, and lights to signal when in operation.
  4. Avoid letting pedestrians or obstacles obstruct your view while operating the forklift.
  5. Never let anyone ride on the forks for any reason.

Parking Procedures:

  1. Secure the forklift when unattended by parking in an approved location.
  2. Set the brakes, lower the forks or load to the floor, and put controls in neutral.
  3. Turn off the motor switch before leaving the forklift.

Policy Review: This forklift safety policy will be reviewed annually to ensure compliance with regulatory standards and effectiveness in promoting safe forklift operations.
