Safe Driving Policy for Caliber Construction Alaska

Aim of this Policy:

To prioritize the safety of our employees and reduce vehicle incidents and at-fault work-related road collisions at Caliber Construction Alaska. Our goal is to promote a safe driving culture within the organization and minimize associated costs and injuries over the next three years.

Objectives of the Policy:

  • To raise awareness among drivers regarding the main risks associated with driving for work.

  • To ensure that employees who drive vehicles for work demonstrate safe, efficient driving skills and adhere to good road safety habits.

  • To maintain all company vehicles in a safe, clean, and roadworthy condition, ensuring the safety of drivers, occupants, and other road users.

Code of Conduct:

At Caliber Construction Alaska, employees driving company or personal vehicles for work purposes must adhere to the following code of conduct:

"While driving company or personal vehicles for work purposes, employees must comply with traffic legislation, prioritize road safety, and demonstrate safe driving practices."

Serious breaches of conduct while driving company vehicles may result in termination and include:

  • Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs

  • Driving while disqualified or without a valid license

  • Reckless or dangerous driving causing harm or injury

  • Failing to stop after a collision

  • Accumulating penalty points leading to license suspension

Responsibilities as an Employee:

Drivers of Company Vehicles Must:

  • Ensure they possess a current driver's license appropriate for the vehicle category and carry it while driving a company vehicle.

  • Immediately notify their supervisor if their driver's license is suspended, canceled, or restricted.

  • Familiarize themselves with the vehicle's handbook and conduct a full daily walk-around check before use.

  • Prioritize reverse parking when able.

  • Display professionalism and accountability when operating company vehicles.

  • Regularly inspect and maintain company vehicles, including checking oil, tire pressures, and other essential components.

  • Regularly wash, clean, detail, and organize company vehicles to promote clean company image. 

  • Promptly remove any and all trash from company vehicles.

  • Drive in compliance with traffic laws, adhere to speed limits, and anticipate hazards.

  • Wear seat belts and ensure all occupants do the same.

  • Refrain from driving under the influence of alcohol, drugs, or medications that impair driving ability.

  • Report any incidents, near-misses, or vehicle defects promptly to their supervisor.

Additional Responsibilities for Drivers Using Personal Vehicles for Work:

  • Seek employer agreement before using their vehicle for work purposes.

  • Ensure their vehicle is legally registered, authorized, and insured for work use.

  • Refrain from carrying loads or passengers beyond the vehicle's capacity or without proper restraints.

  • Avoid using the vehicle in conditions for which it was not designed.

At Caliber Construction Alaska, we prioritize the safety of our employees and take measures to ensure their well-being while driving for work. Our responsibilities as an employer include:

Vehicle Selection and Procurement:

  • Prioritizing safety features when selecting new vehicles, including high safety ratings and essential safety equipment.

  • Ensuring all company vehicles are well-maintained, regularly serviced, and equipped with necessary safety items.

Vehicle Maintenance:

  • Servicing vehicles according to manufacturers' recommendations and maintaining detailed maintenance records.

  • Promptly addressing and rectifying any vehicle defects to ensure safety.

Data Collection and Analysis:

  • Collecting and analyzing data on incidents, collisions, and their causes to identify trends and areas for improvement.

Driving Time and Driver Hours:

  • Monitoring and managing work schedules to prevent unsafe driving practices, including compliance with drivers' hours regulations.

Driver Training:

  • Identifying driver training needs and providing appropriate training or refresher courses on road safety and defensive driving techniques.

Safe Driver Behavior:

  • Encouraging safe driving behavior and providing incentives for adherence to safety policies.

  • Prohibiting mobile phone use while driving and promoting regular breaks to prevent fatigue.

Policy Review:

This policy will be reviewed annually to ensure its effectiveness and relevance in promoting safe driving practices and minimizing vehicle incidents.

  • 49 CFR 382.603 is the applicable regulation requiring supervisors of commercial motor vehicle drivers who operate vehicles that require a commercial driver license to take 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of alcohol abuse and another 60 minutes of training on the symptoms of controlled substances use (120 minutes in total).  The purpose of this training is to teach supervisors to identify circumstances and indicators that may create reasonable suspicion that a driver is using or under the influence of alcohol or drugs, supporting referral of an employee for testing.
